AgeWell Symposium
September 25 at 9 AM
Pathlights’ half-day event is dedicated to empowering older adults, providing them with information and resources to help age in the community, maintain a high quality of life and stop the stigmas associated with aging. This free event includes engaging speakers, chair yoga, and vendor tables from organizations offering services to support you in your journey to age well. You won’t want to miss it. You’ll hear from:
Colleen Ceh Becvar, Gerontologist – Discusses how aging gives us freedom to pursue new hobbies and activities to improve health and increase longevity.
Lydia K. Manning, PHD – Teaches us to recognize ageism and introduces strategies to fight stereotypes of aging to help create an age-inclusive environment.
Leanne Jackowiak – Leads a chair yoga session and explains the mental and physical benefits.

Early-Stage Memory Loss Support Group (8 Weeks)
Starts September 25
In partnership with the Alzheimer’s Association and Orland Park Library, Pathlights is hosting an eight-week support group for those living with early-stage dementia or MCI (mild cognitive impairment) and their care partners. “Early-stage” refers to people, irrespective of age, who are diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease or related disorders and are in the beginning stages of the disease. This group will offer dementia-related education and emotional support and connections with resources.

End of Life Wishes – Starting the Conversation

Planning for end-of-life care is something everyone should do before the need arises. What does that look like to you? Do you want treatment till your last breath? Would you consider hospice/ palliative care? It’s about planning based on your values and personal definition of quality of life. Join Maureen for helpful tips, including how to broach this difficult topic with loved ones who will assure that your care plan is followed and choosing the right person to speak for you when you cannot speak for yourself.

Memory Café – Orland Park

Hold That Thought
October 3 at 11 AM
Have you ever gone into a room and forgotten why you went in there? If your answer is “yes,” you are not alone. Memory does change as we age, but forgetfulness is common for people at all stages of life. In this session you will learn about the memory process, including types of memory, and strategies for helping with everyday forgetfulness.

Avoiding Telephone & Internet Scams
October 8 at 10 AM
Older adults are increasingly the targets of scam artists on the telephone who use lies, deception, and fear tactics to convince the older adult to send them money or provide personal account information. The Do-Not-Call registry may reduce calls from telemarketers representing legitimate businesses; however it will stop criminal telemarketers from calling.
